Seminar on Application and Promotion of Small Hydropower Standard Successfully Held

---On the morning of July 18th, 2023, the Seminar on Application and Promotion of Small Hydropower Standard was successfully held by the National Research Institute for Rural Electrification (NRIRE) of the Ministry of Water Resources of China / Hangzhou Regional Center (Asia-Pacific) for Small Hydro Power (HRC). Mr. Munawar Iqbal, Director General of Hydropower of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) of the Ministry of Energy of Pakistan, Mr. Iqbal Hussain, Director (Admin/MHP) of the Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET), and Mr. Roshan Pandey, Senior Technical Officer of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and other experts attended the seminar in Hangzhou offline. Mr. Muhammad Azhar, Principal Scientific Officer of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) and Mr. Sajid Ali Khan, Vice Chair of the Electrotechnical Technical Committee of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) attended the seminar online. The seminar was hosted by Ms. SHU Jing, Deputy Director General of NRIRE/HRC.


Representatives from the International Center on Small Hydro Power, China Water Resources Beifang Investigation, Design, and Research Co, Ltd., China Three Gorges Corporation, and NRIRE/HRC made presentations on SHP in China & International Standard, SHP Planning and Site Selection, SHP Standard Framework Proposal for South Asian Countries, Application of Chinese Water Resources and Hydropower Standards in Overseas Projects, and The Practice of Hydropower Projects in South Asia. Mr. Sajid Ali Khan, Vice Chair of the Electrotechnical Technical Committee of the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) and Mr. Roshan Pandey, Senior Technical Officer of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) shared information on regulatory policies, technical guidelines, and application of standards in the field of renewable energy, including hydropower, in Pakistan and Nepal. The participants carried out in-depth exchanges and discussions on the applicability of international standards for small hydropower, international cooperation on standards, sediment clearing and dispatching of small hydropower stations for cascade development power stations, and environmental impacts of small hydropower station development, etc.

The internationalization of water conservancy standards is an important task for the standardization work of water conservancy in the new stage, and a vital technical guarantee for China's water conservancy to implement the “Going Global” Strategy and co-construct “the Belt and Road Initiative”, and is of great significance to improve China's international status of water conservancy, to enhance China's water conservancy international influence and voice, and to support the international exchanges in the field of water conservancy. NRIRE/HRC has undertaken Strategic Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation Key Project under the National Key R&D Program- China-Pakistan Joint Research on Small Hydropower Technology, and co-constructed the China-Pakistan “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Small Hydropower Technology.

Under the cooperation framework of the project, NRIRE/HRC has carried out practical cooperation with organizations such as the Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) and the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), assisted the Pakistani side to put forward the framework of Pakistan's small hydropower standards, and worked with the Pakistani sides on the construction of SHP technical standard mechanism and the formulation SHP technical standards.(2023-08-01)
