The MWR's Key Scientific and Technical Project Called "Development on Medium and Small-sized Water Pumped Storage Plant" Passed Appraisal
   ---Recently, a MWR's key scientific and technical project called "Development on Medium and Small-sized Water Pumped Storage Plant", which was completed by National Research Institute for Rural Electrification, has passed an appraisal organized by the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology, MWR. After hearing the achievement report presented by the working group; and evaluating the research documentation and information concerned, all the experts drew a conclusion that this is the first scientific research project in China specialized in the development of medium and small-sized pumped storage plant with relatively systematic and comprehensive illustrations. Its research components partially filled in the gap for the development of medium and small-sized pumped storage power plant in China and played a positive role in promoting the further exploitation of this kind. The general development and research achievement reached the top level compared with other domestic research projects of same kind then. Furthermore, the research on the semi-underground powerhouse and the mathematic model of whole characteristic curve for the reversible unit became internationally advanced. With significant social and economic benefits, there's a prosperous prospect for the application of this research achievement.

    Based on the construction of Xikou Pumped Storage Power Plant, a great deal of research work has been carried out with fruitful achievements scored. The main innovative results are shown as below.

    1. Xikou Pumped Storage Power Plant, the first genuine medium-sized water pumped storage power plant in China, was constructed and put into operation with an appropriate site and layout. This plant is near a load center, with a proportion of length to height between the upper and the lower reservoir L/H= 4.7. Thanks to superior resources conditions, at this plant the cost per kW is relative low. Since operating, the plant has been running very well with significant benefits, from which rich experience is also accumulated for the construction and development of the same kind of plant in China.

    2. It was the first time for a pumped storage power plant in China to adopt the shaft-type powerhouse, which is accommodated to the topographic and geological conditions. Compared with the underground powerhouse, the layout turned out to be more reasonable, which helped to improve operation conditions, facilitate construction and save investment.

    3. According to local situations, also for the first time in China, the semi-voltage induction starting mode was selected for the water pump, and the solid magnetic pole used for the electromotor, which helped the water pump to reduce its starting time and the time for integrating into grid, and led to a lower cost of equipment as well.

    4. The unique means was adopted for the mathematic mode of whole characteristic curve for reversible units, which made the curve relatively even and flat, so as to optimize the hydraulic design for the water conveyance system.

    5. The asymmetrical steel breeches pipe made of conical tubes was adopted in reason. Moreover, by the means of model test and numeric simulation, the fork angle of the breeches pipe and the cone angle of the conical tubes were determined, as to improve the hydraulic operating conditions.

    6. Based on the topographic situation, it was the first time in China to adopt the rockfill dam with concrete facing and ogee dam axis, which increased the reservoir capacity and reduces the excavation amount for the lower reservoir basin. With fruitful practices, it sets a good example for other similar projects (2004-03-29)
